Japanese newspaper reading

Learn to separate what a headline says from what it leaves uncertain.

12 reading lessons · 12 worked headlines · 6 annotated articles

新聞の読み方

Start with one headline

This is intermediate reading practice: you should already read kana and recognize basic Japanese sentence patterns. If noun phrases feel unfamiliar, begin with Unpack a news phrase.

A headline compresses the story into a short heading. Read it for the actor, action and certainty, then use the article to check your interpretation. Begin with the first reading lesson below; try one headline before moving to a full article.

Example: 市、新図書館の整備検討 means the city is considering developing a new library. 検討 means consideration: it does not establish a decision to build. A useful summary preserves that uncertainty.

All headlines and articles here are fictional teaching material, not current news. English support starts on and can be turned off; it does not translate every question or analysis.

読む順番

①見出しで話題をつかむ。②述語と主語を探す。③情報源・時点・対象の範囲を確認する。④事実、予測、意見、未定の内容を分ける。⑤本文の根拠を使って、一文で要約する。

以下の見出しと記事は、AUWENが作成した架空の教材です。実際の事件、運行情報、行政制度、統計を報じるものではありません。読む練習のため、文脈と根拠が分かる例を使っています。

Start with lesson 1: read the explanation and example, write your answer, then reveal the reasoning. English support translates lesson summaries; the analysis and questions remain in Japanese.

LESSON 1

見出し・リード・本文

まず見出しで話題をつかみ、最初の段落(リード)で「誰が・何をしたか」を確認する。その後、背景、根拠、他の立場を読む。すべての記事が同じ順番で書かれているわけではない。

Start with the topic in the headline, then establish who did what in the lead. Read the body for evidence, qualifications, and background. Article structure varies.

市、新図書館の計画発表

「市」は行為者、「新図書館の計画」は発表の内容。「図書館が完成した」とは書かれていない。

確認問題

この見出しは図書館の開館を伝えていますか。

答えと根拠

いいえ。計画の発表を伝えている。

LESSON 2

見出しの省略を補う

見出しでは助詞や文末の動詞が省略されることがある。省略を補うときは、本文で確かめられる範囲にとどめる。「自然な文」にするために、新しい事実を足さない。

Headlines compress grammar. Restore omitted particles and predicates cautiously; a smooth paraphrase must not invent facts absent from the headline or body.

市、橋の修繕計画を公表

市が/橋の修繕計画を/公表した。見出しだけでは工事が始まったかどうかは分からない。

確認問題

「橋の修繕が終わった」と言い換えられますか。

答えと根拠

言い換えられない。公表されたのは計画。

LESSON 3

「へ」は完了ではない

文末の「へ」は、ある方向に動いていることや、今後の方針・見通しを示す場合がある。「実施へ」と「実施した」は区別する。具体的な確定度は本文で確認する。

Headline-final へ often points toward an intended or expected development. It does not itself report completion, and the body determines how settled the plan is.

政府、来月にも新制度導入へ

「来月にも」は、早ければ来月という読みになる文脈。「来月に必ず始まる」とまでは言えない。

確認問題

導入は完了していますか。

答えと根拠

この見出しは完了を伝えていない。時期や決定の段階は本文で確認する。

LESSON 4

漢字のかたまりを切り分ける

長い漢字語は、意味の単位に分けて読む。「電気料金支援策」は「電気料金/支援策」、「観光客受け入れ体制」は「観光客/受け入れ/体制」と考える。ただし、分け方は前後の文脈で確かめる。

Segment long compounds into meaningful units. Avoid assigning a single English gloss to an entire string before identifying its parts and relationship.

市、公共交通利用促進策を検討

公共交通/利用/促進策=公共交通の利用を促すための対策。検討は、実施済みという意味ではない。

確認問題

どの行為が本文で報じられると予想できますか。

答えと根拠

対策を検討すること。実施の有無は別に確認する。

LESSON 5

「誰が言ったか」を残す

「市によると」「担当者は~と説明した」「専門家は~と指摘する」などは情報の出所を示す。引用された意見や予測を、記者が確認した事実に変えて読まない。

Keep attribution attached to claims. A source saying something, a reporter verifying it, and a prediction becoming true are separate matters.

市によると、利用者は増えているという。

増えているという説明の出所は市。「という」だけで情報の正確さの程度が一律に決まるわけではない。

確認問題

利用者の増加は誰の説明ですか。

答えと根拠

市の説明。測定方法や期間は本文の別の部分で確かめる。

LESSON 6

事実・予定・見込み・可能性

「決定した」「予定だ」「見込む」「可能性がある」「検討する」は同じではない。単純な強弱の一本の順位にするより、何が決まり、誰が予測し、何が未定かを整理する。

Distinguish a decision, schedule, forecast, possibility, and consideration. They describe different kinds of claim; they do not form a universal numeric certainty scale.

会社は来年度の売上高が増えると見込んでいる。

増加は会社の予測。現在の売上高がすでに増えた、とは述べていない。

確認問題

「売上高が増加した」と要約してよいですか。

答えと根拠

よくない。「会社は来年度の増加を見込んでいる」と予測と時点を残す。

LESSON 7

長い修飾節をほどく

動詞の形を含む長いまとまりが、後ろの名詞を説明することがある。文全体の述語を先に探し、次に「どんな名詞か」を説明する部分を囲む。

Find the main predicate, then bracket clauses modifying nouns. Japanese relative clauses precede the noun and do not require an English-style relative pronoun.

市が昨年始めた補助制度を利用する世帯が増えている。

[市が昨年始めた]補助制度/[その制度を利用する]世帯/が増えている。文全体の述語は「増えている」。

確認問題

増えているのは市ですか、制度ですか、世帯ですか。

答えと根拠

制度を利用する世帯。

LESSON 8

万・億と比較の基準

万は10,000、億は100,000,000。「前年同月比」は前年の同じ月との比較。「前月比」と混同しない。人数、金額、割合のどれを比べているかも確かめる。

Japanese large numbers group at 万 and 億. Always keep the measurement and comparison period: year-on-year for the same month differs from month-on-month.

利用者は前年同月比10%増の2万2千人だった。

2万2千人=22,000人。数値が丸められていない仮定なら、前年同月は22,000÷1.10=20,000人。実際の記事では丸めにも注意する。

確認問題

前年同月比は、直前の月との比較ですか。

答えと根拠

いいえ。前年の同じ月との比較。

LESSON 9

%とポイントを分ける

割合が40%から45%になれば、5ポイントの上昇。一方、元の40%を基準にした相対的な増加率は12.5%。同じ変化を別の基準で表している。

A rise from 40% to 45% is five percentage points, or a 12.5% relative increase. Keep the denominator explicit.

支持率、5ポイント上昇し45%に

支持率の以前の値は40%。45%の5%を引いて求めるわけではない。

確認問題

40%から45%は、相対的にも5%増ですか。

答えと根拠

いいえ。相対増加率は(45−40)÷40×100=12.5%。

LESSON 10

略語は分野と文脈で判断する

「日米」は日本と米国、「訪日」は日本を訪れること、「都内」は東京都内を指すことが多い。「米」は文脈によって米国にも米という食品にもなる。人物や機関の略称は本文の初出を探す。

Use topic and first mention to resolve abbreviations. A character can represent a country in one phrase and retain its ordinary lexical meaning elsewhere.

米、政策変更を検討/米の価格が上昇

最初の「米」は通常、米国。後の「米」は食品の米と読むのが自然。前後の文で確認する。

確認問題

略称だけを見て、いつでも同じ意味と判断できますか。

答えと根拠

できない。分野、助詞、周囲の語、本文の初出で確認する。

LESSON 11

疑い・容疑・認める・否定する

事件報道では、捜査機関の説明、容疑、本人の発言を区別する。「~の疑いで逮捕」は、有罪が確定したという表現ではない。「認めた」は何を認めたのか、目的語まで読む。

In crime reporting, distinguish an allegation, an investigative action, and a finding of guilt. Preserve the source and exact object of an admission or denial. This is a reading lesson, not legal advice.

警察は、文書を偽造した疑いで男を逮捕したと発表した。

警察の発表は逮捕とその容疑について。「裁判で有罪が確定した」とは書かれていない。

確認問題

この一文を「男が有罪になった」と要約できますか。

答えと根拠

できない。逮捕、容疑、有罪の判断を混同しない。

LESSON 12

報道と社説を読み分ける

社説では新聞社の主張や提言が示される。「~べきだ」「~が求められる」「~と言わざるを得ない」などの表現が出ても、それだけで新しい事実が証明されるわけではない。事実の記述と評価を分けてメモする。

Editorials argue and recommend. Mark factual premises separately from evaluations and proposed action; strong wording does not itself supply evidence.

市は利用者への説明を尽くすべきだ。

「べきだ」は筆者の提言。この文だけでは、説明がどの程度行われたかは分からない。

確認問題

これは市がすでに行った行動ですか。

答えと根拠

いいえ。筆者が求めている行動。
